Romance 1988

A:
The story is about two young sisters, Sybil and Joan, age 22 and 24. They are sitting at a table in the cafeteria in Terminal Three, on Heathrow airport. They are sitting there because Joan is on her way to Bahrain, so she have just flown in from Yorkshire, because of that Joan have a tree hours free block. Her sister Sybil has lived in London for two years, so Sybil has passed by Heathrow. Joan and Sybil are talking about Sybil’s former boyfriend or husband, Oliver. Oliver had left Sybil, but is now re-entering her life. But at the same time Oliver is with Sybil, Oliver is sleeping with others when he is away at work. Apart from that, Sybil and Oliver have been looking at houses, because Oliver is moving upward in his firm. Silby wants to marry for money, and that is what she is doing now. Silby also tells Joan, that they have planned to be tested for AIDS, because they both have been in bed with so many partners. Silby is worried about taking an AIDS test on the National Health, because it is recorded, so she would have to have it done in private. In the last path, a man that has been sitting near them, rises, and tappes Sybil on her shoulder and thereafter goes away.

B:
Sybil, I think, is a "not-ordinary" person. With that I mean, that she is behaving in a very provocatively way. She has a dramatic make-up on, is wearing wired clothes and is talking out very loud. I think that she is an exhibitionist in some way, she likes to be provocative in the public. She is, I think, a person who takes one day at the time, and tries to get the best out of it. Planning her life is not her at all, she is the type: "We have a good time today, so why concern about tomorrow, tomorrow will begin in some way". That is the same point of view, she has about marriage and love. She do not really care that Oliver is sleeping with other girls when he is away, because he have promised he would not do again on the next trip. And when Oliver suddenly appears after a divorce, a divorce with Oliver as the main character, she do not care what had happened in the past or what had happened in the mean time. Now she loves him and then she have to get married again, get a home and so on. Because Oliver is getting higher sociably all the time, that is manifesting that she would and still wants to marry for money, now Oliver has money and status. She says that she will continue to love him, even if he is staying more time out of London than in. My opinion on that subject is that she loves Oliver and others like the wind is blowing. Now she loves him, tomorrow she do not love him, next day she loves him again and another day she loves somebody other than him. She does things before she thinks over things. Her opinion on love is that it is something you can hold, something with four sides you always can have, and something you can change every day if you like. Love is for her certainly not something absolutely permanently.
Sybil's audience is listening very carefully to what Joan and Sybil are saying, I think. Because Sybil is talking very loud indeed, so loud that Joan is embarrassed. But that is not a new feeling for Joan, that have she felt all her life, with her sister. Joan, I think, has a good explanation in this case, because Sybil almost is yelling things about her sex-life out on the "stage" of the cafeteria. The audience is listening so carefully, that it is possible so se their reaction to the different subjects Joan and Sybil are discussing. One of the people in the "audience" even comments to what they are saying, at the end of the story, to the sisters surprise, I think.
Joan is opposite her sister more adult, she is not so rebelliously, quick and exhibitionistic as her sister. Silby wants to have a house with Oliver almost at the very first, Joan is at this time still questioning Silby’s relationship with Oliver, because she knows Silby all to well. Joan do not get into thing as fast as her sister, her life is also more planned than Silby’s. Silby do not have a permanent job as a secretary, she is temping, but Joan does have a permanent job as a secretary. Joan has a grip on her own life, Silby does not.
The title of the story can mean, that Silby’s love is one in many, for example could her next love-story have the title: "Romance 1989" and so on. But it can also be a characterising of a type, in this story a type of 80’s kind of love between people. I think it is a rather pure main-title, because of its very neutral choose of words, nothing advanced. It’s saying to little for my taste.

Translation:
A house that shall be seen!
This extraordinary villa is idyllic situated near by lake and forest, and at the same time there’s only 10 minutes work till public transport and to the local shopping-centre.
The house, which is an older to-storey redstonevilla, has tree basements, 3 bathrooms, sauna and a gigantic living-room, where they can sit and enjoy the sight over the beautiful planned garden. The kitchen has been tastefully modernised. Upstairs there are 5 rooms, all with balcony.
There is no doubt about, that you will feel at home in this house. Call 47 11 47 11 and collect some more information. We look forward hearing from you. (17/9-1998)
