Moscow - start

From the 17th December 2003 to the 17th January 2004 I have been on a trip to Russia for visiting my friends there, and practicing my Russian. It was my third time in Russia, although technically it was my fourth time. The last time I had to go out for a couple of days to get a new visa! This time I traveled by land from Aalborg, Denmark to Moscow, Russia. Three days of traveling with bus, train and ferry over the following cities: Frederikshavn (Denmark), Göteborg (Sweden), Stockholm (Sweden), Tallinn (Estonia) and finally Moscow. The trip was good, but a bit devastating, so when I returned to Denmark, I took good old Aeroflot to Copenhagen. I spent both Christmas and New Year in Moscow - which wasn't very approved by my family, but they survived:-) All together I had a marvelous trip.

The pictures are dedicated to all my good friends in Russia, without them this trip hasn't been possible.... enjoy!

I came to Göteborg by ferry from Frederikshavn in the middle of the night, so I had to stay 2 hours outside the railway station waiting for my train to Stockholm. The railway station first opened 4.30 in the night, my train was 5.00 - bad luck! Even thougth I looked like and Eskimo, it was cold the full way to my bones!

No these wasn't one of my trains ... unfortunately. I had a slower Intercity train instead. The trains on the pictures are the Swedish railway systems (SJ) flagship; X2000. A beautiful express train which runs 200 km/h in service, but has archived the speed of 275,7 km/h on a test run! I like trains:-)

Sweden is a special country, one of the only countries in the world where you can only by alkohol in state owned shops. "Systembolaget" is very famous in Denmark for making jokes, and laughing about the Swedes, but I have to say that they have a very diversified number of beer, wine and spirits. In Denmark we can only buy Carlsberg and Tuborg - almost. But the day politicians will introduce "Systembolaget" in Denmark, there will be an armed revolution for sure!

On top of the picture, is written "Sveriges riksbank", which translated into English means something like: "The Royal Bank of Sweden". But the building belongs to the Swedish Parlament (Riksdagen). So what could be more interesting than listening to the politicians discussions? So I took a seat at on session, I was the only listener - so appearently they didn't discuss anything interesting. I love democracy!!!

I couldn't help myself. Stockholm is a very beautiful city, I think it is more interesting than Copenhagen. See this beautiful illuminated office building by the skerries in central Stockholm.

It is hard to read from the side of the ship, but this is ferry sailing to Riga in Latvia. The pictures is taken from a quite similar ship. The Talllink ship which goes to Tallinn was host for my night.

Yeah, that is me... just an hour or so after reaching Tallinn. I am sitting in western style pizzaria near the bus station in Tallinn. Now there is only one day left for Moscow. It is my second time in Tallinn, which is a very beautiful city and nice city. It is one of the most modern and dynamic places I have seen in Easthern Europe. It's similarities with Scandinavia is so staggering, that it feels just like home.
